Interview With Pro Triathlete Jan Frodeno

Here’s the Tri Swim Coach interview with long time Pro Triathlete Jan Frodeno!

Jan Frodeno is a German triathlete. He is the gold medal winner in men’s triathlon at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, 3-time winner of the Ironman World Championship in 2015, 2016, and 2019, and 2-time winner of the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in 2015 and 2018. He is the world record holder for the long distance, set in Roth, Germany in 2016 with 7:35:39 hours.

I got a chance to ask him a few questions. Followed by the Q&A, I included a press release on a new brand of goggles Jan is partnering with. Enjoy!

1. How did growing up as a swimmer give you an advantage in triathlon? Any disadvantages?
Well primarily I think it gives you a brilliant work ethic. Very few people get excited about swimming 200 laps in a pool twice a day, so you learn to love the sense of improvement you get. Swimming is brutal that way, since a few hundredths of a second can make the difference between a great or average performance. However, swimming as such is not much use to the biomechanics of running and I found myself getting a lot of injuries early on.

2. You’ve been racing triathlon a long time, 2 decades! What would you say have given you this kind of longevity in the sport, and even recovering from a serious back injury?
A genuine love for sport, and this sport in particular. It also gave me a chance to reinvent myself when I was tired of it. Triathlon is so multi-faceted that it keeps me intrigued. That is key.

3. How has this year, 2020, been on you, both mentally and physically?
Mentally it’s been interesting, riding the waves of the ups and downs, but mainly positive moments. There are so many new opportunities, but I’ve struggled with not being able to commit to fixed dates while still trying to keep my motivation high and chase the big sessions. In the beginning, it’s easy because the challenge is little, but once the key sessions came up, I struggled to go all in, simply to avoid the disappointment of yet another race cancellation.

4. How would you calm the nerves of a new triathlete in the swim?
I calm myself in any situation by positive affirmation and breathing exercises. Focus on what you can influence, the rest will work itself out.

5. What have you added or changed to your training in the past couple of years that has paid off?
A great gym routine. It took me that long to find!

6. How do you fuel particularly for your 70.3s and Ironman races?
I only use fluids during my races and eat the way I normally do beforehand, maybe a little more. As I’ve gotten older I’ve struggled to keep the weight on in the later part of the season, which is lucky for me, because one of my biggest pleasures of my job is being able to eat a lot.

7. Since this year is pretty much a wash for triathlon, how do you see the sport making a comeback next year?
Sport will adapt to the changes and governments will realize that sport is a big part of people’s mental health. We have a whole winter to figure out new concepts of meeting regulations and so I think creativity will meet a slightly more receptive side of the regulators to make great, perhaps slightly smaller events.

PRESS RELEASE:

Triathlete Jan Frodeno Signs Multi-Year Partnership with THEMAGIC5 Swimming Goggles

The three-time Ironman World Championship winner and Olympic gold medalist joins forces with the world’s best-fitting swimming goggles

Three-time Ironman World Champion Jan Frodeno today announced that he has entered into a multi-year partnership with THEMAGIC5, makers of the world’s best-fitting swimming goggles.

A 2008 Olympic gold medalist, Frodeno won his third Ironman World Championship in 2019. This past April, he completed an Ironman at his home in Girona, Spain, raising over $250,000 for hospital workers fighting the coronavirus. Frodeno swam 2.4 miles in his counter-current pool, cycled 112 miles on his roller trainer, and ran a full 26.2-mile marathon on his treadmill, reaching over 320 million viewers via livestream.

Frodeno completed the swim portion of his at-home Ironman in a pair of THEMAGIC5 Blue Magic Mirror Silver goggles, unbeknownst to the brand. After the Ironman, he reached out to THEMAGIC5, expressing interest in a partnership.

“I was intrigued by the concept and have been amazed by how the product lives up to its promises,” Frodeno says. “A lot of other brands claim a perfect or premium fit, but they’re all one-size-fits-all. These goggles are different. They are custom-made, and that means they actually fit you.”

THEMAGIC5 makes the world’s first and only custom-fitted swimming goggles, designed to match the contours of a user’s face. The mobile app utilizes an advanced facial scan to capture unique data points used to model the nose bridge, gasket, and other custom components of the goggles. The result is a custom-fitted, supremely comfortable pair of goggles that doesn’t leak water, leave pressure marks, or distract.

Equipped with the power of unprecedented fitting technology and design, the world’s best triathlete now wears the world’s best swimming goggles.

“I’ve never felt more comfortable in the water,” Frodeno says. “These goggles get me excited to swim.”
