As I’m making a bit of a swimming comeback, after not having trained much for a couple of years with a shoulder injury, I’ve realized one concept that stands out as important- and that is consistency.
The other day, I didn’t have a lot of energy to get through a workout. I didn’t get enough sleep the night before and just wasn’t feeling quite right.
I could have easily skipped my swim that day.
But I talked myself into “just getting in the water” instead of trying to do a full workout.
That got me to the pool, and in the water. I ended up doing almost as much as what I planned on the day before, and felt great about myself when I got out!
It’s not to say to never use intensity in your workouts or your schedule.
Sprint days are amazing.
Challenging yourself to a tighter interval can pay off.
But it’s the consistency that will win out in your swimming goals.
When the excuses start piling up in your mind (I know they’re there, I have them!), like “it’s too cold, I’m too busy, I’m tired”, you can politely acknowledge them and move forward with your plans anyway.
The difference is, if you just keep thinking “consistency” instead of “hammering out a workout”, your excuses will start to fade away.
Your mind can deal with “just get in the pool” most of the time, but the idea of “Get this 2700 yard workout done” is much too overwhelming some days.
This is so important to keep in mind as we head into the holiday season, and there are so many commitments and temptations.
It’s 100% better to just do 1 lap in the pool than to blow the whole thing off entirely.
Keep this in mind and have a productive next few weeks!
